Veganism Introduction Four questions for the reader: Do you want to decrease ruthless cruelty? Do you want to decrease global warming? Do you want to decrease destruction to the environment? Do you want to decrease health risks? As these yeses are being counted -- unanimity, right? -- a fifth question looms: are you willing to change from an omnivorous diet to a vegan diet? (McCarthy). Many people would answer no. The ethical thing to do when learning about the horrible effects of eating meat is to stop eating meat. However many people just close their eyes and ears to the truth, and continue with their ways. I argue that it is unethical to just ignore it, and that it would be beneficial for the human race to switch to a plant based diet because it is more healthful for us, it would decrease the mistreatment of animals, and it would decrease pollution and slow down global warming. Francis and Sophie, did almost instantly, Gavirle Principe, was linked to a Serbian terrorist group called the Block hand. The Assignation gave Austria-Hungary a good reason to crush Serbia, a lay time emerge in the Balkans. But first they gained Germanys promise to support them in any action they took against Serbia. Then they sent Serbia a list of Humiliating demands on July 23. Serbia accepted most of the demands and offered to have the rest settled by an international conference. Austria-Hungary rejected the offer and declared war on Serbia on July 28 1914. It was expected to be a quick victory. The Belgin army was fighting tough and holding up the Ger mans but only for a short time. By Aug. 16, 1914 the right wing of the German army could begin its pincher move. They drove back the French and a small British force in southern Belgium. They then swept into France but instead of the army swinging west around Paris according to the plan one part of the wing perused the retreating French troops.They moved east toward the Marne River that left the Germans open to attack from the rear. General Joseph Joffery was the commander of all the French forces. He stationed his forces nerve the Marne River, east of Paris. He prepared for battle. The first of these was launched in late July when French Marshal Ferdinand Foch opened the Second Battle of the Marne. A decisive victory, Allied troops succeeded in forcing the Germans back to their original lines. As the fighting at the Marne waned around August 6, British troops were preparing for a second assault near Amiens. Originally conceived by the commander of the British Expeditionary Force, Field Marshal Sir Douglas Haig, the attack was intended to open rail lines near the city. Seeing an opportunity to continue the success achieved at the Marne, Foch insisted that the French First Army, just to the south of the BEF, be included in the plan. As the French lacked large numbers of tanks, a bombardment would be necessary to soften the German defenses on their front. The Allied Plans Meeting to discuss the attack, British and French commanders were able to strike a compromise. The First Army would take part in the assault, however, its advance would commence forty-five minutes after the British. This would allow the Fourth Army to achieve surprise but still permit the French to shell German positions before attacking. Prior to the attack, the Fourth Armys front consisted of the British III Corps (Lt. Gen. Richard Butler) north of the Somme, with the Australian (Lt. Gen. Sir John Monash) and Canadian Corps (Lt. Gen. Sir Arthur Currie) to the south of the river. In the days prior the attack, extreme efforts were made to ensure secrecy. These included dispatching two battalions and a radio unit from the Canadian Corps to Ypres in an effort to convince the Germans that the entire corps was being shifted to that area. In addition, British confidence in the tactics to be used was high as they had been successfully tested in several localized assaults. At 4:20 AM on August 8, British artillery opened fire on specific German targets and also provided a creeping barrage in front of the advance. Moving Forward As the British began moving forward, the French commenced their preliminary bombardment. Striking General Georg von der Marwitzs Second Army, the British achieved complete surprise. South of the Somme, the Australians and Canadians were supported by eight battalions of the Royal Tank Corps and captured their first objectives by 7:10 AM. To the north, the III Corps occupied their first objective at 7:30 AM after advancing 4,000 yards. In this article we will explore the difference between those terms. Homonym comes from the Greek homo which means â€Å"same† and onym which means â€Å"name.† When we talk about words, however, what should we use to define their names? The spelling or the pronunciation? Probably both. Homonyms, therefore, can be defined as two or more words that share the same spelling, or the same pronunciation, or both, but have different meanings. Since there are several â€Å"types† of homonyms (e.g., same spelling but different pronunciation, same pronunciation but different spelling, same spelling and same pronunciation), further categorization is needed. We can say that homonyms represent the big category, from which 3 sub-categories emerge: Homophones: two or more words that share the same pronunciation but have different meanings. They may or may not be spelled on the same way. Examples: write and right, desert (to abandon) and desert (a thing deserved) Homographs: homonyms that share the same spelling. Differences Of Lying And Not Telling The Truth Lying and not-telling the truth are different in their own right, and have moral and ethical implications associated with each one. This is not merely a matter of semantics; it is a matter of substance. By the use of analogy, there are major difference between justified and unjustified homicide. Murder is unjustified homicide and will always be considered wrong by a moral society. Not every instance of killing a person, however, is considered murder. In scenarios of capital punishment and self-defense occasions can justified homicide. Similarly, in the case of a lie there is an unjustified discrepancy between what you believe and what you say, and so lying is may always be considered immoral. In some circumstances, not telling the truth in order to preserve a higher moral law may well be considered the right thing to do and thus is not actually a lie. While Kant asserted that lying, or deception of any kind, should be forbidden under any interpretation and in any circumstance. He stated this because if it is universally acceptable to lie, then no one would believe anyone and all truths would always be assumed to be lies or deceptions. He also stated that the right to deceive an individual couldnt also be used because it would discard the rights of the person being deceived as an end in itself. Therefore, Kant denied the right to lie or deceive any person for any reason, regardless of context or anticipated consequences. While in the previous scenario not telling the truth isnt considered lying, there are other situations cannot be interpreted in the same fashion. If an omission of the truth is used to mislead or deceive someone for your own greater ends, or for an immoral goal, then the non-truth cannot be construed in the same way. For instance during the most recent financial collapse many banks and financial firms mislead the country and their clients about the value of different products they were trying to sell. Since their intentions were to mislead, or deceive their clients on the sole purpose to turn a profit, thus it cannot be considered a morally justified act. If the intentions of these firms like Goldman Sachs wasnt done to mislead, but done in the interests of their clients, unknowing the unfortunate consequences. Then this company shouldnt be considered a liar, but unfortunately they knowing lied and mislead their clients. Since the act was done for malice, and for their own greed, the n their act of deception must be considered a blatant lie. While in most cases, such as the ones already presented the distinction between lying and not-telling the truth are made quite clear. On the other hand, these distinctions cannot always be viewed in black and white, but in varying shades of gray. If the intentions of the lie is not done for your own self-interests, or for your own ends, but done in a manner to save a person from embarrassment and humiliation, thus it cannot be considered a lie. For example if a loved one asks am I over weight? While knowing all along the answer is yes is it in their best interest and yours to be absolutely blunt with them? If their condition isnt life threating or will cause ailment to the individual in the future, then the act of lying to protect their feelings isnt morally wrong and should be considered a lie. They are also required to take computer classes that teach them how to type correctly. The papers and projects are a good way for students to practice their typing skills. Another thing that most Elementary schools have the children learn about is the Internet. Most children go to the library and the computer lab to do a project or a paper. The teacher usually teaches the students research techniques. These techniques are not just for looking up books, but can prove very valuable in finding other assorted information on the Internet too. Students can learn how to find a good credible source from all the useless â€Å"junk websites†. Then they can learn how to give the original author credit for their work. This is important because if they do not learn how to get the information from the computer and the library, then they will have a really hard time in Middle School and High School trying to complete research papers, and other projects. Knowledge is an extensive concept which has no precise definition since it has no end or limit. In TOK context, the acquisition and understanding of knowledge varies from person to person depending on how one has been brought up, his/her lifestyle and experiences and how widely he/she has been exposed to the great world. In other words, if you look at the above topic, what I would comprehend would be different from what anyone else would. In my view, not only is this claim applicable to the audience as a whole but also my mind and my upbringing agree with it; hence this statement can be assessed from a variety of perspective or to be precise, point of view. Instead of analyzing and finding out more about the client’s main issues, the writer became engrossed with the similar event portion. He may place his focus on the filial issue. If the writer is unable to deal with his unresolved conflicts from the past or other relationships, it can affect the therapeutic outcome. It may slow down the process of gathering information that is important for the client’s needs. The writer’s focus may wander and disorientate, that can impair the quality of the session. By having the impression of showing good and positive impression to the clients, the counter transference affects the therapy session when the counselor is readily accepting the client’s opinions. The writer’s blind spots may hinder his ability to deal with various similar behaviors shown by the clients, or the writer’s old wounds that surfaced as he works to process the client’s pain. Each client needs to be met where they are and worked with on their individual â€Å"stuff†, without interference from either the counselors’ prior experiences with clients or their personal values. On the other hand, counselors need to know what their personal thresholds are. For example, if the writer feels that he cannot work with a child abuser or a murderer without allowing his personal values affect his work with the client, he needs to take the precautionary measures to excuse himself from such clients and refer them to another counselor. Infinite Light Essay Infinite Light Essay Chandler Meyer Mr.Robel English 2 Honors January 30,2013 Infinite Light What keeps a group of English boys calm and collected on a deserted island with the absence of adults, shelter, or recollection of what happened? In the novel Lord of The Flies by William Golding, the main character Ralph and his wise sidekick Piggy claim a conch shell as their anchor on to civilization. From the beginning Ralph uses the conch to gather and unite all the boys that were on the island. Throughout the story the conch plays a symbolic role representing not only a tie to civilization, but also Ralph’s role as a righteous and justified chief. Towards the end, the conch is thrown into a continuous struggle to preserve civilized manner, or let the savage behavior of Jack’s hunting group dominate the goodness, of which is slipping. From the beginning of the story, the conch plays the role of being the safety net for the boys, as well as a constant reminder that they maintain order and discipline on the island. The importance of the conch is represented right at the start as Ralph and Piggy use it to summon the scattered boys. â€Å"Ralph grasped the idea and hit the shell with air from in his diaphragm. Immediately the thing sounded. A deep, harsh note boomed under the palms, spread through the intricacies of the forest and echoed back from the pink granite of the mountain†(14). Right after the conch is blown boys immediately start to leak in from the lush forest. Once everyone is together and acquainted, there is a meeting held where there is talk among the boys about needing a â€Å"chief†. After comparisons between Jack and Ralph, the more favorable selection points to not only Ralph himself but for the fact that it is he who possesses the conch. As reasons are tossed back and forth there fo r the selection of chief there are some specific ones that were noted about Ralph starting with â€Å"†¦there was his size, and attractive appearance; and most obscurely, yet most powerfully, there was the conch. The being that had blown that†¦was set apart†(19). As the reader can see the conch has displayed already an almost illuminating presence of power from the shell. Right from the moment Ralph claims the position of chief and bearer of the conch, there is a never-ending stab at power and control by Jack as he tries to undermine Ralph, which is present until the very end. Towards the middle of the novel is when Ralph’s authority gets questioned. Along with the organization of the boys little society seeming to slowly evaporate into a regressed state of savagery of which Ralph, Piggy, Simon, and SamnEric seem to avoid. At this point Jack has established a group known as the â€Å"hunters† and is as thirsty for control as ever as he demonstrates when he announces to a group of boys â€Å"We’ll hunt. I’m going to be chief†(123). As events start to fold out and the story continues, the only thing that keeps Ralph holding on to a any link to authority is the conch, but even that seems to be growing less and less of importance in the eyes of Jack’s tribe. In addition to this the reader can also notice that between the two tribes only one is in possession of the conch, which is Ralph's tribe. The symbolization of possessing the conch is that they maintain a civilized structure as well as being able to do things such as maintain a fire and also be able to calmly talk about practical issues that must be addressed at the meetings. In contrast Jack’s tribe, which lacks the conch, is always acting foolish and savage, this could be because they lack the anchor to civilization. Furthermore a great example that shows the crumbling of their society is when Jack leads a plot to steal the fire as he explains to the hunters. â€Å"We’ll raid them and take fire†¦Roger can snatch a branch while I say what I want†(128).This represented really a moral turn for the worst for jack’s group because they had to â€Å"steal† the fire which is an indication of delinquent
