As a result of his unnecessary decision that was made purely with his own interests in mind, Odysseus lost his entire crew throughout the course of the journey to the wrath of the gods. Odysseus’ pride, which could also be seen as arroganc e, led to a desperate need within in him for others to know his name and associate all of his great deeds with it, and resulted in him making poor decisions that harmed other people. The main character of The Old Man and the Sea, Santiago, was an old man who had built up a deep sense of pride throughout his life. He also exhibited the qualities of a code hero, as he dealt with some unavoidable losses in an honorable way while still maintaining his pride. As demonstrated in the text, â€Å"‘Thank you,’ the old man said. He was too simple to wonder when he had attained humility. But he knew he had attained it and he knew it was not disgraceful and it carried no true loss of pride† (Hemingway 13-14). At this point in the text, it was the evening before the old man set out on his mission to finally catch the great fish he had been dreaming about for so long, despite not having caught anything for weeks. The quote implies that at one point in his life, when he was still in his prime, Santiago might have been more arrogant due to his extraordinary fishing skills. Now, however, he has come to the realization that he is a humble person, but he did not dwell in misery over what had made that happen whether it was old age or the lack of fish he was bringing in. It becomes even clearer to the reader over the course of Santiago’s very personal journey attempting to catch the great fish that he has not fallen into desperation. Though it was a hopeless attempt from the beginning, Santiago, a true code hero, suffered through it all with dignity and grace. This shows his pride, something that was not caused by the praise and admiration of others, but rather by his own dignity that he carried within himself, regardless of what happened or what other people thought of him. As seen by his thoughts in the text, Santiago was able to admit that humility was not something to be ashamed of, and he acknowledged that it could exist alongside pride. This allowed him to follow his ambitions of catching the great fish while also being able to accept inevitable failure without losing his sense of self worth. Media Analysis: The Laramie Project Moises Kaufmans The Laramie Project, is most commonly referred to as a docudrama, a play that is largely based on real facts. The play is all nonfiction facts about the death of Matthew Shepard, a gay college student whose brutal murder shocked the country in 1998. Based on more than 200 interviews with the towns citizens during the year and a half following Shepards murder, members of Moises Kaufmans Tectonic Theater Project, the company best known for the Broadway smash, Gross Indecency: The Three Trials of Oscar Wilde, traveled to Laramie, Wyoming (home to both the victim and his killers), and conducted The Laramie Project, directed by Kaufman with input of the performers, who also served as dramatists/writers. The Laramie Project is a theatrical collage of excerpts from these interviews and from the journals of the actor-writers themselves. Despite the fact that the events of the play are based on actual events with their own drama, Kaufmans talents as a playwright are used to enhance the emotional impact of these events and create an atmosphere that stirs the audience more than just reading of the events does. The question is, how does he do this? The most fascinating aspects of the play are the various reactions and emotions of the people that were interviewed. From the sadness and guilt of some of the townspeople, to the joyful celebration of the so-called â€Å"Reverend† Fred Phelps, played by James Murtaugh. The people who should have felt guilt over Matthew’s death did not, while those who did not bear much or any responsibility sometimes felt a sense of guilt. In this way, the play presents an example of dramatic irony in the reactions of the various groups of people involved. Father Roger Schmit, played by Tom Bower, a Catholic priest, expressed how â€Å"jolted† he was when he bravely performed a vigil for Matthew Shepherd. He also expressed his anger that various religious ministers decided not to â€Å"get involved (p. 5). † The priest was presented as a more sympathetic figure, being one of the most tolerant of the religious figures in the play. He did not even bother to consult the bishop for permission to do the sermon. The Baptist minister’s wife’s thoughts were also interesting. She claimed that her husband’s thoughts about the murder were that â€Å"he has very biblical views about homosexuality†¦he doesn’t condone that k ind of violence†¦but he doesn’t condone that kind of lifestyle†¦ (p. 27). † She doesn’t even realize the ontradiction in her statement about her husband’s opinion, considering the Bible states the death penalty for male homosexuality. She goes on to say that â€Å"we are all hoping this just goes away. † It is almost as though she wants to forget what happened, seeing it as an annoyance, and nothing to get all bent out of shape over. Matt Galloway, played by Joshua Jackson, a bartender that worked at the place where Shepherd is picked up by his two killers, expresses a sense of remorse, despite the fact that he really did not have anything to be sorry for. He said that â€Å"I shoulda noticed. I shoulda not had my head down when I was washing dishes for those twenty seconds. Things I coulda done. (p. 52). † This feeling is probably natural and certainly understandable, but this really shows the dramatic irony. The fact that the bartender feels guilty when he really had nothing to be guilty about and yet the people who bear responsibility for fostering the hatred and intolerance that lead to Matthew’s murder really do not feel much guilt at all. For example, the Baptist minister, He is reluctant to talk about the entire fiasco, but when he does, it is clear how he really feels. While the minister supports the death penalty for Matthew’s killers, his statement about Matthew speak for themselves about his attitude quite clearly. â€Å"I know that his lifestyle was legal†¦I hope that Matthew Shepherd as he was tied to that fence†¦had time†¦to reflect on his lifestyle (p. 69). † Like many, he categorized Matthew Shepherd as a â€Å"lifestyle,† as if every Lesbian, Gay, Bi-sexual, or Transgendered person leads the same lifestyle. He showed no sorrow or regret for Matthew’s murder, and never considered whether or not his sermons may have helped promote the kind of violence that Matthew was a victim of. Unfortunately, this Baptist minister’s actions are minor in comparison to Fred Phelps, who said among other things that â€Å"†¦two times for every verse [the Bible] talks about God’s love it talks about God’s hate (p. 78)†¦we love that attribute of God†¦because God’s hatred is pure (p. 79). This was, undoubtedly, the most extreme reaction in the play to Matthew’s murder, and it is an attitude like this that contributes to the same homophobia that killed Matthew Shepard. Toward the end of the play, one of the murderers, Russell Henderson played by Garret Neergaard, said that he was sorry for killing Matthew Shepherd. â€Å"I know what I did was very wrong, and I regret greatly what I did†¦I’m ready to pay my debt for what I did. (p. 83). â €  This could potentially shatter the dramatic irony, however, I ‘m not so sure that it did. This shows an example of a guilty person, the guiltiest out of everyone in fact, who did express guilt. However, the judge in this case did not buy it, and neither do I. â€Å"You drove the vehicle that took Matthew Shepherd to his death†¦bound him to that fence†¦left him out there for eighteen hours†¦and you did nothing†¦this Court does not believe that you really feel any true remorse for your part in this matter (p. 83). † The judge finishes wondering if Russell Henderson really understands what he did. I can’t help but to wonder the same thing. The range of reactions from the various characters, as written by Kaufman, ran from guilt and sorrow to stubborn denial and even the perverse elation of Fred Phelps. Kaufman highlights the irony by doing a fantastic job showing which characters felt which emotions. The fact that, in general, the characters who were not really at any blame in any way felt guilt, whereas those who were really responsible did not, is an unfortunate irony, but not nearly as unfortunate as the events that lead to the story behind this play. That said, the heart-wrenching nature of this material does eventually come through, gracefully making points about tolerance, the communities we live in and their ability to change. Brian A. Kates excellent editing maintains a strong sense of narrative momentum through the scripts potentially tricky structure. From Laura Linneys monologue as a politely homophobic housewife to Terry Kinney as Dennis Shepard, the grieving father whose agonizing courtroom speech provides emotional climax both Kaufman’s play and film deserve a â€Å"thumbs up† and a job well done with this tragic story.

Transcendentalism During the late 1800s and early 1900s, a new era was developing in American society. The United States was an idealistic nation with separate beliefs and lifestyles. One of the most intriguing lifestyles introduced during this time was transcendentalism. Many authors, such as Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nathanial Hawthorne, Walt Whitman and Henry David Thoreau, developed this idea and tried to make people understand the meaning behind this new way of lfe. Through his extensive writings of books, essays and poetry, Thoreau gave the American public a deep insight to the new world of transcendentalism. While he was growing up, Thoreau rarely left his birth town of Concord. He felt that man didn't need wider horizons in order to write efficiently (Hoff, 31). He wrote his private thoughts in journals to help him write lectures and books, and never wrote or spoke about what he himself had not experienced (Hoff, 32). Thoreau attened Harvard, but believed that he had not really learned anything of worth while there(Hoff, 34). This is surprising because most people think of Thoreau as an intellectual, who most definitely had a sound education that he appreciated. Thoreau was a "skilled naturalist (Whitman, 802)" who was extremely knowledgable about weather, geology, flora and fauna. He was known to be quite friendly with birds and other such animals. He was a self-proclaimed mystic, transcendentalist and natural philosopher. (Whitman, 802). The first person to use the word "transcendental" was German philosopher Immanuel Kant. He used the term "transcendental philosophy" to describe the study of pure mind and its forms. The word "transcendentalism" is defined as the "belief or doctrine asserting the existence of an ideal spiritual reality that transcends the empirical and scientific and is knowable through intuition (Koster, 1)." It is also known as, in philosophy and literature, "the belief in a higher reality than that found in sense experience or in a higher kind of knowledge than that achieved by human reason (Encarta)." This idea originated with the Greek philosopher, Plato, who had recognized the existence of absolute righteousness. American transcendentalism began with the formation of the Transcendental Club in Boston in 1836. The leaders of this movement included essayist Ralph Waldo Emerson, feminist and social reformer Margaret Fuller, minister Theodore Parker, teacher Bronson Alcott, philosopher William Ellery Channing, and Thoreau. This club published a magazine, The Dial, and some members performed an experiment of communal living at Brook Farm in Massachusetts during the 1840s. The American roots of transcendentalism began in New England with Puritanism. This was the idea that transcendentalists were direct descendents of people that fled to this region in search of religious freedom. Another major influence of the transcendental movement was platonism. This ideal held the supreme god as being primary, with all other things derived from it. Romanticism also played an important role in the development of this new era. It was: The delight in, and wonder at, the beauty and beneficience of nature, the recognition of the individual human being as being superior to society, the concomitant objection to social restraints upon the individual, and, above all, the ascendency of emotion and intuitive perception over reason (Koster, 8). It also involved the celebration of individualism and self-examination. Another factor was that of Orientalism. Many people believed that American interest in the Orient began as a purely economic interest, but then moved on to other things such as spirituality and morality. Religious philosophers that appeared later applied Plato's idea of transcendentalism to the fact that God could not be described nor understood through the voice of human experience (Encarta). The Scholastics recognized six transcendental concepts: essence, unity, goodness, truth, thing and something. The terms transcendent and transcendental were used in a more narrow and technical sense by Scholastic philosophers late in the Middle Ages to signify concepts of unrestricted generality applying to all types of things (Encarta). Anyone Can Be A Monster Primo Levi, an Italian Jewish chemist, writer, and Holocaust survivor, once said that Monsters exist, but they are far too few in number to be truly dangerous. More dangerous are the common men, the functionaries ready to believe and to act without asking questions. When people think of evil people or monsters, we typically think of the main figure of a movement or group. The most evil person people think of is Hitler or Stalin. It is easy to blame the main figure solely, but by doing this we fail to remember the ordinary people who are involved in letting horrendous acts occur. These people did not work alone. It is everyday people who have the power to control what will happen. It is through civilian opinions and actions that evil acts can occur. Hitler had millions of followers and supporters that did not question what he was doing to Jews. They and many other countries failed to realize by following blindly without questioning, they were condemning a group of people to death. Mon sters do not have to be a completely evil being. Many people do not realize that all monsters are just ordinary people. In her short story, The Lottery, Shirley Jackson is able to express the chilling horror of blind obedience. Jackson is able to show that any ordinary person is capable of horrific acts by conforming mindlessly to a persons surroundings. Although people are have the ability to cause change and do good, Shirley Jackson is able to convey in her story The Lottery that the normalization of events, fear and tradition, and selfishness are the roots of blind obedience and cause everyday people to become monsters. To begin, Shirley Jackson shows that heinous deeds can become normal over time. The most sinister aspect of The Lottery is the normalization of the killing of a neighbor. Every single person in the town is not bothered by the lottery. The townspeople schedule the lottery to happen around 10, so that it will be over in time for them to have lunch. The people of the town have no issue with continuing their day after killing someone that was apart of their community. It is through normalization that bad things can occur. The Council of American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), a Muslim civil rights and advocacy group, points out that the killing of Jews was not the first step in the Holocaust. In 1930s Germany there was a lot anti-Jew propaganda. Jews were often an object people could blame for their problems. They complained that Jews were taking jobs away from Germans; which is much like some Americans views on immigrants. Through the constant blame of Jews and propaganda against them in the media, the Nazis were able to normalize the hatred of Jews. By blindly listening to the media and bias, the people in 1930s Germany became just as bad as Nazis. The townspeople in The Lottery do the exact same thing. The children are playing with the rocks that will kill a person that they know and interact with constantly; they fill their pockets full of stones. Children should be questioning whether it is right to be killing a person, but they conform to what others do around them. No one questions the lottery. The townspeople gossip and joke before the lottery begins. They just think of the lottery as a mundane activity that they are forced to do. The lottery is just another part of their day they have to get thorough. If someone were to question the lottery, than people wouldnt have to die. In addition, once Tessie is chosen to be stoned and begins to panic, the townspeople tell her to be a good sport. These people dont even think about her or her situation. They blindly stone this lady without thinking of her family or why they are really doing it. The act of killing someone has become so normal to this town that they just want it to be over with quickly. Jackson warns that if heinous acts are normalized then the true horrors of a situation are hidden, making ordinary people monsters by blind obedience. Furthermore, the blind obedience found in The Lottery is even more intensified by fear and tradition. Fear is one of the best motivators; anyone can control another person through fear. Fear and tradition in The Lottery go hand in hand. There is a fear that if the sacrifice from the lottery is stopped, than the crops wont flourish; the lottery has worked for the townspeople for centuries, so they dont consider stopping the tradition. They repeatedly conform to the same pattern every year of bringing out the old box and killing someone. This is all they have ever know; lotteries are conducted in villages in all of the surrounding areas around the townspeople. The oldest man in town, Old Man Warner, has been apart of over 70 lotteries. No one in town has ever not been apart of the lottery. It has always happened and the crops always grow. The townspeople are like drones that carry out orders without thinking or realizing how pointless the lottery really is. They are afraid to speak up about the lottery because of what might happen to them. It is just a small town of just 300 people; no one talks about the lottery because they are afraid of judgment by the town, and they are afraid to alter the lottery for what might happen to their crops. The black box used for the lottery is old and shabby. There is always talk about making a new box, but no one wants to mess with the tradition that is represented by the black box. Jackson is able to demonstrate how strong of a hold tradition and fear have on people. Tradition makes it easy to blindly follow a routine, and fear is used a deterrent to stop an sort of questioning toward the lottery. In addition, selfishness is a further exemplifies blind obedience. We as people tend to not question anything until we personally are involved. The townspeople do not care about the families of the people who are sacrificed at the lottery; they only care about themselves. Even Tessie, the woman who gets stoned, jokes around during the lottery until she is chosen to be killed. We only care about ourselves and our safety. Tessie even tries to bring some of her married children in the lottery draw for her family to increase her odds of living. She would rather one of her own child die in her place than her. Nobody questions anything until they are apart of it. In present day, many people do not sympathize with the suffering and discrimination of minority groups because it does not affect them personally. They cannot see the pain of others because it does not affect them. Once the Hutchinsons have been chosen for the lottery, some of Nancy Hutchinsons school friends hope that it isnt her . Nancys friends do not care about Nancys family. They only think about themselves and what they would do without Nancy. They dont think of Nancys suffering or how the lottery will affect her and her family. Thomas Du Bose believes that Jackson is suggesting that people are not concerned about injustice and kindness unless these problems touch them personally. The townspeople are able to blindly obedient because the lottery doesnt concern them or their families. Once they open their piece of paper and dont see a black dot, they are relaxed; its not them. They just want the stoning to end quickly so they can go to lunch. Selfishness and not being able to put yourself in someone elses place causes people to be apart to horrific deeds. Any person can become a monster. It is not just figureheads who are evil, it is also ordinary people. Shirley Jackson is warning us that by being blindly obedient that we can create terror and suffering. Jackson is urging us to look for signs of normalization of awful things. She is telling us to question everything even if it is tradition, or is it scary to oppose. Jackson is telling us to look beyond ourselves and to not conform to awful practices.
